Blizzard Safety for Extreme Winter Weather
Basic weather safety tips for blizzardsLearn some basic blizzard safety tips so you know what to do in any bad winter weather situation.
Unlike some of the other severe weather events on this site, blizzards present a different weather challenge and a different angle when it comes to . I love the weather, which means I love a good blizzard or snowstorm, but at the same time I have to realize that they can cause a lot of problems and if you're not careful, death. For one, it's cold. Sometimes the temperature can be downright bone chilling. In almost any other severe weather event, it's pretty warm.
Next, you're dealing with snow (and in some cases drifting snow). Something that just doesn't go away quickly unless it's very warm within the next couple of days after a blizzard. It can take days to dig out, and some cities and towns can literally get shut down. A NOAA weather radio is always good to have at your fingertips so you can stay up to date on the latest winter alerts (especially if the power goes out).
If you know a blizzard is coming your way, it would be a good idea to check the weather reports and at least go out and buy a few days worth of water, flashlights with batteries, and canned food. As stated above, the power could go out and you could be without running water or a working oven. Even if the power doesn't go out, it would be best to stay in while the storm is going on, and for awhile after the storm has finished and weather conditions improve. It will take cleanup crews a little while to clear all the snow on the roads.
If you are traveling by car or if you MUST travel, bring the same necessities you would have in your house to prepare for a dangerous weather situation. Water, food, etc. A blanket would be good too. If you get stuck, a good rule to go by is for every hour, turn the car on for ten minutes to keep heat in the car to keep you warm.
