Find out which tornadoes and weather outbreaks are the most well known in weather history. There have been many tornadoes and tornado outbreaks over the years that have gained weather fame. These storms caused lots of damage and resulted in many lives lost. These twisters below made their mark on history...and not in a good way. Tri-state Tornado This is probably one of the most well known tornadoes in weather history. On March 18th, 1925, this twister tracked over three states (Southeastern Missouri, Southern Illinois, and Southwestern Indiana for 219 miles) in the span of 3 hours and was (and still is) the deadliest tornado in US history killing 695 people and ijuring over 2,000. This twister was part of a large severe weather outbreak that happened with other deadly tornadoes occuring that day. Nowadys, the tornado is confirmed as an F5 (see tornado scale) and the pictures from that day truly show it. Palm Sunday Tornado Outbreak This was another deadly twister outbreak that occured in the midwest on April 11th, 1965. The weather was horrible that day and a series of at least 45 tornadoes ripped across the region killing over 200 people and injuring over 1,000. In some states like Indiana, it was the deadliest severe weather outbreak they had ever seen. Other states hit included were Michigan, Ohio, and Illinois. The outbreak lasted over 11 hours and a well known story was a disputed F5 hitting the Midway Trailer Park, which basically obliterated the homes with no traces of them found afterwards. New Richmond Tornado This deadly twister hit New Richmond, Wisconsin on June 12th, 1899. This twister started out as a waterspout on the nearby lake. It killed 117 people and injuring 125. The reason for many of the deaths and injuries were to to the fact that many people were out in the streets because of the circus in town. The storm came up upon people unexpectedly and even some people who were able to take shelter from the weather were unable to survive. The town had to be compeltely rebuilt and the damage caused was estimated at $7million USD (2005 estimate). Waco Tornado This famous twister hit on May 11th, 1953 and touchdowned just southwest of Waco at around 4pm. The twister traveled for over 23 miles, but more than 114 people were killed with over 600 people injured. Like many of the other tornadoes, this twister snuck up on people and not many people were able to get to adequate shelter in time even with some weather warnings. Over 1,000 buildings were destroyed and took lots of time before the town got back on its feet. Black Friday Tornado This deadly F4 twister hit in Edmonton, Alberta and caused tons of damage.
