How are Hurricanes Named? Weather Facts

Read up on the recent practice of naming hurricanes

So how are hurricanes named? With all the list of hurricane names, it can make you curious about the weather...

Hurricanes weren't always given names. In fact the practice of naming hurricanes is a fairly recent practice dating back to the early 20th century. Storms like the famous Galvestion hurricane in 1900 were never named. Many countries used different methods to name hurricanes. Some used latitude and longitude to name them and other countries like the West Indies named them after the Saint's Day the storm fell on.

The practice of naming hurricanes for the US primarily began during WW2 in the Pacific. Storms were very common here and the military started naming the cyclones using female names (usually their wives or girlfriends...I find this funny...no offense women!!), a practice which continued for awhile.

The US weather service followed suit not too long after that. Men's and women's names began being used in 1979 and this continues until this day. The World Meteorlogical Organization is in charge of naming storms around the world today and they are rotated on a six year basis. The only letters which are not used to name storms are Q, U, X, Y, and Z. They also occasionally vote on new names to keep the list fresh.

For storms that form in the Atlantic, the names range from French, to Spanish, to English. My personal favorite all time name is Bertha, as when this storm happened, "Big Bertha" was a fairly common comedic bit at the time. It made news headliners pretty easy to come up with.

If the list of hurricane names is used up, they move on to start using the Greek Alphabet. Pretty funny right? This has happened only once that I can remember and that was in 2005 which was as busy a hurricane season that I can remember. That was also the year that powerful Hurricane Katrina came ashore (that name is of course retired).
