How do Blizzards Form? Common Weather Facts

Learn What Causes Blizzards

So how do blizzards form? Learn what weather conditions are needed and what causes blizzards.

Winterstorms happen a lot during the wintertime, but blizzards are more rare. I personally can only recall one or two blizzards that I've experienced in my lifetime. The good thing? School was closed! But these strong weather systems can also cause power outages which are no fun in the cold, and even death if you're not careful.

So what weather conditions are needed for a blizzard to happen? Well first of course you need cold air in order for snow to happen. The temperatures need to be below freezing aloft and at ground level in order for this to happen.

You also need tons of moisture. Usually this comes with powerful low pressure centers moving from south to north which wraps the moisture around to the backside of the low where most of the cold air is. Usually it is not cold enough ahead of the storm in the warm sector. Nor' Easters are notorious for this and they get a lot of their moisture from the warm waters of the Atlantic.

Or like in my home state of Michigan (which always has unpredictable weather), you can get cold air blowing across the cold lakes for moisture, and in turn, you get lake effect snow.

Next, in order for clouds to form and precipitation to come about, you need warm air to rise over the cold air in the storm. This results in strong winds and in order to be classified as a blizzard, the winds must be over 35 MPH.
