How do Floods Occur? Awesome Weather Facts

What causes floods to happen? Homework and School help on

How do floods occur? Why do floods occur? Find out what kind of weather causes floods including flash floods.

There are a lot of factors with the weather that can happen in order for a flood to occur. Heavy rain over a long period of time or a short period of time (flash floods), melting snow combined with rain, or a combination of these things that cause things like rivers and lakes to overflow, or drainage systems to back up.

Most of the time, the water can be absorbed my the ground if it's not already saturated or too dry. The rest of the water goes downhill naturally, and that's how you get rivers and streams. Notice that most rivers have their source at a high point and flow downhill. It's also not uncommon for a river to run along the bottom of a valley through mountains.

Considering that water flows downhill, this makes sense. If conditions with the weather cause it to rain too much, or if there is too much melting from snow, eventually the rivers, streams, or lakes won't be able to handle the excess water, and then boom, a flood occurs.

How do Floods Occur...Flash Floods Weather

These can be very dangerous and it's good to get good weather safety info on what to do when faced with one. They occur quickly and when a lot of rain falls in a very short amount of time. Thunderstorms are the main culprit a lot of times.

When weather conditions cause heavy thunderstorms to occur in dry places like the southwest United States, or any desert area, flash floods can happen frequently due to the dry ground and the water not being able to absorb the water efficiently. Many deaths occur each year due to these flash floods in the desert.

Elsewhere, flash floods can occur when rain falls closer to the source of a river or stream, and the water then flows downhill quickly. So how do you know if you're in the middle of a flash flood? Well if you see the water rising rapidly, it's probably a good idea to move from that spot and get to higher ground ;)

If you are ever faced with a weather situation where you are driving, and you are approaching a flooded area of water, DO NOT drive through it. Sure there is a chance that the water may not be that high, but unless you know that for sure (you see other cars driving through without a problem) don't do it. A common way people die during a flash flood is because of cars being swept away by fast moving water.
