The basics

What are the hurricane causes and effects? Find out all the weather facts you need to know...

There are many things which need to come together for hurricane causes and effects to occur. For cause, the basic ingredients are warm water, minimal wind sheer, and warm moist air. All of these together usually present the right conditions for a hurricane to form, mainly during hurricane season. The steps for a storm to become a hurricane are first, a tropical depression, then a tropical storm, then a hurricane. Of course all of this is just a basic and shortened version of what causes hurricanes. For a more in depth look, check out How do Hurricanes Form.

Effects of Hurricanes

So what are some of the effects of hurricanes? Well for one, you can start off with the storm surge. It may be the most dangerous aspect of a hurricane. Weaker hurricanes will have a weaker storm surge and of course strong hurricanes will have a stronger storm surge. Even with weak hurricanes, staying near the coast can be dangerous and prone to flooding and battered structures.

Staying near the coast during a hurricane that Cat 3 or higher (see Hurricane Categories) would definitely not be the best idea. Also with storm surge, the location of landfall is important since the winds of a hurricane come from different directions.

Another effect of hurricanes are tornadoes. Tornadoes can easily form due to the rotation of a hurricane and tornadoes in a hurricane can be even more dangerous since they are more difficult to see.

Wind is probably the next biggest cause aside from storm surge. Even tropical storms or weak hurricanes can cause quite a bit of wind damage. This can result in power outages, which then in turn means water and gas can be cut off for days. Wind also determines how bad the storm surge will be.

Heavy rain and of course flooding is another major effect. Flooding is actually the main cause of deaths during hurricanes. How fast a storm is moving determines how bad the flooding is. A storm could dump loads of rain, but if it is moving quickly, the effects are lessened. However even if a weak tropical storm were to move slowly or sit stationary over an area, it could cause catastrophic flooding.

All in all, hurricanes have many causes and effects and it's best to be be prepared and up to date on what they are.
