Largest Tornado Recorded Weather FactsAnd Biggest Tornadoes in HistoryWhat is the largest tornado recorded? Find out the answer as well as other large tornadoes and outbreaks in weather history. There have been many large tornadoes and tornado outbreaks since weather record keeping began. This has been a question posed by many people who have interest in the weather. The Largest Tornado Ever Recorded The largest tornado ever recorded was a tornado that touched down near Hallam, Nebraska on May 22nd, 2004. The tornado was measured to be about 2 and a half miles wide and nearly wiped the town of Hallam, Nebraska off the map. It was a typical wedge tornado with a wide base. This tornado was deemed the largest tornado by damage path, but another tornado, the 1999 Mulhall tornado had a greater windfield of nearly 4 miles so depending on how you look at the statistics, either one could be said to be the largest tornado ever. Also, it must be noted that how large a tornado is, doesn't always have an effect on how strong it is. Some tornadoes can be pretty large, but be weaker than smaller tornadoes in terms of their wind. Largest Tornado Outbreaks Severe weather across the Plains and Midwest have caused many outbreaks over the years (the weather conditions can get very unstable here...especially in Tornado Alley). Probably the most famous and well known outbreak is the Super Outbreak which took place from April 3-4th, 1974. The storms on this day caused 148 tornadoes and 319 deaths over several states. Never before had so many powerful tornadoes occurred in such a short time either. No outbreak since then has been as violent as that one. Another major outbreak occured in the fall of 1992 where 95 tornadoes were spawned. Deadliest Tornado in US History The deadliest tornado in US history happened March 18th, 1925 and was called the Tri-state tornado for the simple fact that it stayed on the ground long enough to cross three states-Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana. This tornado killed 695 people. The tornado was part of a larger outbreak which killed 747 people...so you can imagine how dangerous this tornado was since it's death toll nearly matched the rest of the storms on that day.
