Retired Hurricane Names

Check out the retired hurricane names since 1954

List of retired hurricane names. Storms that were so destructive that the name had to be retired.

Storms that are very memorable go into weather history. If a storm has been so powerful and destructive, that it had long term effects on the economy of the area, the country that was affected by it can request that the name of the storm be retired. Usually storms are renamed on a six year cycle but the reason why you don't see a Hurricane Andrew anymore is because of how powerful that storm was. Here is a list of retired hurricane names with the years beside them:

The most memorable storms for me would probably have to be Andrew, Isabel, and Katrina. When Andrew hit, I was only 7 at the time, but I remember tracking it like clockwork. I also had a friend who lived in the Bahamas and it did go right over the islands.

Isabel would proably be the one I remember the most because it was the first time I ever experienced a hurricane. It was my freshman year of college and my first time living out of state. The storm hit our campus in the Hampton Roads area and we were evacuated to the gym for ONE WEEK!! Needless to say it was horrible. No electricity, no running water...it was pretty bad and our campus got hit pretty hard as well.

I think everyone remembers Katrina and the damage it did to New Orleans, Mississippi, and Alabama. I can't imagine experiencing a storm like that.
