Thunderstorms are awesome forces of weather. Some people are frightened by them, and some people even get excited at the prospect of a thunderstorm coming their way. I'm one of those people who loves a good thunderstorm during the summertime to cool off in the hot and humid weather of the Midwest at times. So what are some basic thunderstorm facts? Some basic thunderstorm facts:

What is a thunderstorm?

They are storms created by unstable air and they need lift mechanisms such as cold fronts, sea breezes, or mountains. For more on the weather conditions needed, check out How do Thunderstorms Form

Where do thunderstorms mostly occur?

They can and do pretty much happen anywhere with the exception of extremely cold weather climates. The weather conditions needed can happen pretty much anywhere in the world.

What is the difference between a Severe Thunderstorm Watch and a Warning?

A thunderstorm watch means weather conditions on that day are favorable for severe thunderstorms to form. A warning means that a severe thunderstorm has been spotted by trained weather spotters or indicated by doppler radar. Severe weather storms can produce tornadoes though the main weather threat when a severe thunderstorm watch is issued are strong winds and hail.


Lightning

Lightning is probably the most dangerous part of the storm and is one of the most dangerous phenomena in weather. It is quick and can strike without warning. You never want to be out in the open during a strong storm as this practically makes you a wide open target for a lightning strike. Avoid trees and metal objects as over 100 people are hit or killed by lightning each year in the states.

Thunderstorm quick weather facts:

    - At any given moment on the earth, there are over 1,800 thunderstorms happening at the same time.

    - Thunderstorms always cause lightning and sometimes lightning will even strike miles ahead of the main storm so be safe and use common weather safety tips.

    - The strongest type of thunderstorm is the supercell thunderstorm. Find out more about the different types of thunderstorms.

    - The United States gets on average about 100,000 thunderstorms a year, mostly in the midwestern and southern states where the weather can be unstable during many times of the year. (Florida is number 1)

    - Most of the time, straight line winds from thunderstorms are responsible for damage during a storm (winds over 100 MPH)

    - Large hail causes over a billion dollars in weather damage to structures and crops acorss the United States.
