Thunderstorm Safety Weather Tips

What are some basic things you should know?

Learn some basic thunderstorm safety tips for adults and for kids. Severe Weather can pop up quickly, so be prepared.

It's always good to be prepared just in case severe storms are headed your way. During the spring and summertime, you will especially want to keep an eye out on the forecasts for that day to see if there is any possibilities for severe storms. Severe storms can throw many things your way including hail, strong winds, flash flooding, and of course, tornadoes.

One of the first things I can recommend is to get a simple radar application for your cell phone. If you don't know how to read a radar, it really is pretty simple. Just know your location, and if you see any yellow, orange, and red colors on the screen headed your way, storms are headed your way. Of course storms can pop up and dissipate at a moment's notice but it's better to be prepared.

I have a weather application that I pay about 4 dollars a year for and I can get radar for my location, satellite, and current weather conditions. It really comes in handy. Some common knowledge for thunderstorm safety while inside include:
    - Staying off the telephone
    - Try not to take a shower or bath when a storm is overhead
    - Stay off electronic devices
    - Stay away from windows
Now I've broken all these tips on more than one ocassion because I'm usually tracking the storm from the TV, my computer, or my cell phone (if it's early in the morning). But these are good guidelines to follow. Just use common sense. When you're headed outdoors, some simple thunderstorm safety tips would be:
    - Take shelter in a sturdy building or car
    - DO NOT hide under a tree...you will just be asking to get struck by lightning
    - Get off the golf course the first time you hear thunder. I've been caught a few times out on the course and had a few close calls with lightning.
    - Stay away from metal objects and water
    - A sign lightning may be about to strike you is if your hair starts standing on its ends. Drop to your knees and bend forward if this happens.

So these are the basic things that will keep you safe. As I said above, a radar can really come in handy and can keep you and your friends one step ahead of the storm. Getting Weather Radio

Getting a weather radio can help you be prepared during severe weather season. Midland, Reecom, and Oregon Scientific, all make great emergency weather radios.
