Tornado Chasers Weather Facts

What do professional storm chasers do?

Find out what tornado chasers do and how they operate in the weather world. Where to find professional storm chasers and videos.

So what exactly do storm chasers do? I know you've seen them on the Discovery Channel and other TV shows, but there is a lot that goes into storm chasing. For one, it is a dangerous thing to do. Only trained professionals should be doing it although many people do it anyways (and I'm guilty of it as well!).

For fans of weather, it can be a thrilling thing to do. There are even companies that offer tornado chasing tours now so people can get a chance to see a tornado up close and personal.

Although storm chasing can be a dangerous (and not to mention low paying salaries) profession, the advances that have come from it have saved many lives. Many storm chasers have special equipment attached to vehicles which track the movement of storms and tornadoes. There are even machines/robots that storm chasers will ut right in the path of the storm or tornado.

Once the storm or tornado pass over the device, information is gathered which is the used to help predict and warn people about the dangerous storms in the future.

There was a show on the Discovery Channel where one group actually had a heavy armored car and they were trying to drive into tornadoes. And I'm sure everyone can remember the movie Twister (more Tornado Movies).

Dangers that Tornado Chasers Face

So what are the actual dangers of chasing tornadoes? Well not only do you have to worry about avoiding the path of the tornado, you have other hazards like lightning, hail, animals on the road, downed power lines, blowing debris, flooding, and getting lost. With all the electrical equipment, lightning is a serious concern and storm chasers are always aware of this. Also keep in mind that storm chasers are constantly driving while also looking at weather equipment and listening to the radio for info on storms.
