Tornado Facts and General Weather

Common weather facts about tornadoes

Learn some basic tornado facts. Want to learn more about tornadoes? Learn about these fun and interesting weather facts about tornadoes.

There is a lot to know and learn about tornadoes, but some basic weather facts about them can be helpful (and specific facts for kids as well). Some of the facts about them are also interesting and surprising. Tornadoes certainly are an amazing force of nature (which are hard to forecast....see Forecasting Tornadoes) and it would be good to learn about them for safety and just for general knowledge. So let's start! Some basic tornado facts:

When do tornadoes occur?

Tornadoes can occur anytime of the year. The most likely time for them to form however is in the springtime in the plains and southern states. During this time of the year, the weather is changing, and the air is very unstable and suitable for tornadoes. But, I do recall many times of violent tornadoes during the wintertime (mostly in the south) due to unusually warm weather.

Where do tornadoes mostly occur?

Though they can and do form anywhere in the world, the United States, specifically Tornado Alley, get the most tornadoes out of anywhere in the world because unstable weather conditions are commonly found in this area.

Where is the safest place to go during a twister?

You preferably want to head to a basement or underground weather shelter if you have one. If you don't have one, the most interior part of the house on the lowest floor.

I saw a Tornado Watch and Warning on the weather report the other day...what's the difference?

Well a tornado watch means that weather conditions are favorable for tornado development that day. So you should keep a lookout and keep up to date on the weather especially if you're going to be out and about. A tornado warning means that a twister has been either spotted on the ground by trained spotters, or that Doppler radar has indicated rotation in a thunderstorm and there could be a tornado on the ground. Most neighborhoods have tornado sirens nowadays and also news and weather reports are pretty good at covering these things when they happen.

Which city has seen the most tornadoes?

That would be Oklahoma City which has seen over 100 tornadoes. A weather fact I was surprised about.

Tornadoes and Hurricanes both spin...what's the difference?

Well hurricanes cause damage on a wider scale. Consider that a hurricane can literally cover hundreds of square miles at once. So they can do a lot of damage over a wider area. Tornadoes at their largest, which is about a couple of miles wide (very rare EF5s), can have greater wind speeds, but the path of destruction is much narrower. If you see tornado damage pictures on the news and weather sites, you can sometimes see a whole block of houses destroyed, while houses right across the street have little to no damage. It really is quite amazing.

Which state gets hit by tornadoes the most?

That would be the great state of Texas. It's part of Tornado Alley and the state averages about 125 tornadoes every year.
