Where do Tornadoes Occur?

Weather facts on the common places tornadoes occur

Where do tornadoes occur? Find out the many places where tornadoes happen and take place and which areas get hit most often.

Despite what many people may think about the weather, tornadoes can happen just about anywhere. As long as the right weather conditions are present, a tornado can form, and these weather conditions can be present all over the globe. Overall, the United States is the place where most tornadoes occur. The good thing is that MOST tornadoes do not hit towns or cities. Usually they just spin out over in the open field and die out (especially in the plains states).

The average number of tornadoes that form every year is around 1,000 give or take a few numbers. The springtime in April in May is when most tornadoes occur, and this is because there is a lot of instability in the air due to the changing seasons. The right weather conditions usually happen during this time for tornadoes to occur.

Other countries that are most prone to tornadoes are Japan, the UK, Uruguay, Australia, and South Africa. I've lived in Michigan most of my life, right in the city of Detroit, and there is only one time that I can remember a tornado coming right into th city. It was back on July 2nd 1997, and an EF2 went right through the middle of the west side of the city, about a mile or so from my house.

I never thought a tornado could actually go through a city like that, but it did. It was pretty scary yet exciting at the same time as the sky turned green, and the lights flickered on and off for about 5 minutes in the basement. Outside of riding out Hurricane Isabel, it's probably the most memorable weather event of my life.

Since then my home state of Michigan has had its fair share of tornadoes, and a few have happened already in 2011.
