So what does winter have in store for us this year? It always seems to be a toss up and we all know how crazy the weather can be...especially winter weather. One year your are may get hardly any snowstorms or winter precipitation, but then the next year, your city seems to get pounded with what seems like winter's revenge for not living up to its name the previous year.

Truthfully climate change (also check out the world weather temperature) over the past decade has a lot to do with the changing winter weather patterns, and it has been a bit more difficult to pinpoint what kind of winter weather your area will have (actually it's always been hard to predict the weather during this time of the year). Also, depending on how you feel about the weather, a good winter can mean different things for different people. Some people like myself, love a good winter storm (but hate that endangers people of course) beautiful things like Aurora Borealis. Other people cannot stand the sight of snow and can't wait to move to a warmer climate. So what's in store for the winter of 2011 - 2012?

The Farmer's Almanac

The trusty Farmer's Almanac has been in publication since 1818 and is a favorite for weather predictions among many people around the world. It has always featured long range winter weather predictions, and many people swear by its accuracy, but studies over time have shown that it's weather predictions are no more accurate than random chance. Still it's fun to read and get your hopes up (or down). It also features info on cooking, fishing, and even has humor and trivia involved. Definitely a good purchase.

For the 2011 - 2012 winter weather predictions, the Farmer's Almanac breaks it down like this for each region of the United States:

Upper Northwest

For weather in cities like Seattle and Portland, expect average temperatures with it being quite rainy throughout the winter.

Upper Rockies

For weather places like Boise, you can expect average temperatures and precipitation all around.

Southwestern States

From San Diego to Las Vegas and Phoenix, you can expect the weather to be very dry with average temperatures and normal precipitation.

Upper Midwest

For the Upper Midwest states like Minnesota and the Dakotas, it will be very cold with average snowfall.

Lower Midwest

For cities like St. Louis, and places nearby, you can expect it to be very wet with average temps.

Eastern Midwest

For the weather in places like Detroit, Chicago, and Cleveland are expected to have average temperatures, with it being very wet, AND very white (lots of snow)

Southeast

From Texas all the way to the Carolinas, it will be very mild and very wet.

Florida

Florida will have dry weather with mild temperatures

Mid Atlantic and Northeast

Expect Above normal temperatures along with the weather being stormy and wet in cities like Virginia Beach, D.C., Philadelphia, New York, and Boston.

Upper Northeast

In places like Syracuse, Buffalo, Albany, and all the way into northern Maine, predictions call for average temperatures and very snowy.

So there you have it for the winter weather predictions this year. As said above, don't expect complete accuracy out of it, but take it as you will. Besides the Farmer's Almanac, many weather forecasters are calling for a harsh winter for many parts of the United States with major blizzards hitting Chicago and New York. As always, the only thing we can do is wait and see and prepare (Blizzard Safety). Info courtesy of the Farmer's Almanac
